Lawrence Abu Hamdan nació en 1985 en Amman, Jordania
Actualmente, vive y trabaja entre Dubai y Beirut
Lawrence Abu Hamdan es un artista y “oído privado” cuyos proyectos han tomado la forma través de instalaciones audiovisuales, performances, trabajos gráficos, fotografía, sermones islámicos, composiciones en cintas de cassette, paquetes de papas fritas, ensayos y charlas. El interés de Abu Hamdan por la intersección entre el sonido y la política tiene origen en su formación en la música autoproducida.
En 2013, su audio-documental ‘The Freedom of Speech itself’ fue usado como prueba en el Tribunal de Asilo e Inmigración del Reino Unido ante el cual Abu Hamdan fue llamado a testificar como perito judicial. El artista continúa haciendo análisis de sonido para investigaciones legales y de defensa de derechos. Recientemente, sus trabajos han sido protagonistas de la campaña ‘No More Forgotten Lives’ para la organización Defence for Children International. Los trabajos de audio forense que realiza el artista son llevados a cabo como parte de su investigación dentro del grupo Forensic Architecture en el Goldsmiths College de Londres.

Lawrence Abu Hamdan es co-ganador del Turner Prize en 2019. También ha sido galardonando con el 2020 EMAF Award, el Edvard Munch Art Award, en 2019, el Baloise Art Prize 2018 y el Abraaj Art Prize 2018. En el 2017 ganó el premio de cortometraje en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Rotterdam, y en 2016 recibió el Premio Nam June Paik de nuevos medios. Recientemente ha recibido la 2022 Future Fields Commission in Time-Based Media otorgada por el Philadelphia Museum of Art y la Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo.
