Lawrence Abu Hamdan
Lawrence Abu Hamdan est né en 1985 à Amman, Jordanie
Il vit et travaille entre Dubaï et Beyrouth
Lawrence Abu Hamdan étudie les implications politiques et sociales du son à travers la production de documentaires audio et narratifs, d’installations audiovisuelles, de vidéos, de sculptures, de photographies, d’ateliers de travail et de performances. L’intérêt de l’artiste pour le son et son intersection avec la politique provient de son passé de musicien et de ses expériences dans la musique DIY.
Ses enquêtes acoustiques ont été utilisées comme preuves au Tribunal d’asile et d’immigration du Royaume-Uni et comme plaidoyer pour des organisations telles qu’Amnesty International et Defence for Children International, en collaboration avec les chercheurs du collectif Forensic Architecture.
Lawrence Abu Hamdan a obtenu son doctorat en 2017 au Goldsmiths College de l’Université de Londres, ainsi que des bourses de recherche au Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry de l’Université de Chicago et au Vera List Center for Art and Politics de la New School, New York.

Lawrence Abu Hamdan est le co-lauréat du Turner Prize 2019. Il a également remporté le 2020 EMAF Award, le 2019 Edvard Munch Award, le Baloise Art Prize 2018 et le Abraaj Art Prize 2018. En 2017, il a reçu le Short Film Award au Rotterdam International Film Festival, et en 2016, le Nam June Paik Award for new media.. Plus récemment, le Philadelphia Museum of Art et la Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo lui ont décerné la 2022 Future Fields Commission in Time-Based Media.
