Teresa Margolles @Fourth Plinth

We are pleased to announce that Teresa Margolles’ installation Mil veces un instante is now on display at Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth, marking the 15th artwork.

This installation features 726 life masks in plaster depicting the faces of transgender and non-binary individuals, with 363 from Mexico and 363 from the UK. The installation serves as a poignant tribute to those lost to hate crimes, particularly honoring Karla La Borrada, a trans singer murdered in Ciudad Juárez.

Each mask bears traces of lipstick, false eyelashes, and other personal details—reflecting the individuality and humanity of each subject. Over time, the masks will weather and transform, echoing the ongoing struggle for dignity and freedom. Inspired by the Mesoamerican tzompantli, Margolles’ work pays homage to victims of societal neglect.
