Lara Almarcegui @Museo Patio Herreriano

Don’t miss Lara Almarcegui’s exhibition Gravas y arenas at Museo Patio Herreriano for which she has developed two site specific projects that stem from the characteristics of Valladolid’s built environment.

In Caliza she works with limestone called Caliza del Páramo dated back to 5 and 9 million years. The installation showcases limestone blocks as raw material. In doing so, the reality of the construction process is highlighted, the origin, future and end of the materials used. By displacing the limestone blocks from its usual site in the quarry, Almarcegui slows the production rhythm of material extraction, while the blocks are exposed they are suspended from the chain, only after the exhibition is done they will reenter the production line to be used as tiles and other construction elements.

For the second project, Almarcegui explores another construction time in which she developed her characteristic guides around the abandoned gravel pit Pinar de Jalón, located south of the city of Valladolid. There, gravel and sand was extracted from the Pisuegra and Duero rivers sediments. As the city grew in the seventies the volume and rhythm of gravel extraction increased. Today, along the rivers extraction areas are still open and visible in open air, some active and many abandoned without restoration and with the evidence of extraction still evident.

The exhibition also showcases some of Lara Almarcegui’s previous works. Gravas y arenas is open until March 9, 2025. Don’t miss it!
