Discover work of Óscar Muñoz at MASP

Video room : Óscar Muñoz on view at MASP, brings together three video works by Oscar Muñoz. Through ephemeral materials such as water, charcoal powder, and the body, the exhibition reflects on the instability of images and the fragility of memory, while addressing the historical context of violence, disappearances, and political conflict in Colombia.

Across 𝘕𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘰 (2001), 𝘓í𝘯𝘦𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘰 (2006), and 𝘙𝘦/𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰 (2004), Muñoz explores the tension between appearance and disappearance, constructing images that dissolve almost as soon as they emerge. Faces formed in charcoal drift away with water, reflections vanish in the palm of a hand, and portraits painted with water evaporate before they can fully materialize. Through these transient processes, the artist reveals the impossibility of fixing identity, memory, and history into permanent forms.

For decades, Muñoz’s practice has investigated the relationship between image, identity, and remembrance through photography, drawing, printmaking, painting, and video. Since the early 2000s, video has become central to his work, allowing him to document the unstable nature of his materials and foreground disappearance itself as both a visual and political condition.
