Bouchra Khalili @ Luma Westbau

Don’t miss Bouchra Khalili’s A Trilogy: The Tempest Society, The Circle, and The Public Storyteller now open at Luma Westbau.

The exhibition features three of Khalili’s seminal works: The Tempest Society (2017), The Circle Project (2023), and The Public Storyteller (2024). Through storytelling, montage, and performance the works follow the legacy of the Mouvement des travailleurs arabes (MTA) and its theatre groups, Al Assifa and Al Halaka, their fight for equal rights in 1970s France and their legacy.

Through film and video, Khalili is able to construct complex and layered narratives, of stories suppressed by official narratives, in which the non-professional performers are, at the same time, the main storytellers and editors. Putting together fragments of oral histories with personal testimonies, texts, photos, and moving images, the films activate the past and reveal its connections to the present.
