Lawrence Abu Hamdan @Berlin Biennale

Lawrence Abu Hamdan is participating in this year’s Berlin Biennale STILL PRESENT!, curated by Kader Attia.

Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s Air Conditioning is an evolving graduated image which maps the Israeli army’s sonic occupation of the Lebanese airspace over a 15-year period, from 2006 to the present. This installation links the ocular and the auditory regarding the 2006 July War between Israel and Lebanon. The visual texture of the cloud assigned to each aircraft is illustrative of a specific sonic experience. The embodied violence of these flights emerges in painterly backdrops that reveal the density of aural pollution wrought by Israel on Lebanon in recent history. Although in Lebanon these singular violations are seemingly short-lived, Abu Hamdan presents them as an accumulated event, akin to the aftermath of a fifteen-year explosion.

Air Conditioning is on view as part of the Berlin Biennale STILL PRESENT!, which is open until September 18, 2022. Don’t miss it!
