Cevdet Erek est né en 1974 à Istanbul,
où il vit et travaille actuellement
Cevdet Erek a étudié l’architecture à l’Université des Beaux-Arts Mimar Sinan à Istanbul entre 1992 et 1999. Cevdet Erek a étudié l’architecture à l’Université des Beaux-Arts Mimar Sinan à Istanbul entre 1992 et 1999. En 2003, alors qu’il exerce en tant qu’architecte et se produit avec le groupe de rock Nekropsi, il reçoit un diplôme en ingénierie du son et design au Centre d’études avancées en musique (MIAM) de l’Université technique d’Istanbul, où il obtiendra par la suite son doctorat.
Sa pratique artistique est basée sur les thèmes du son, de l’architecture, du rythme, du temps, de la musique, de la danse et de la spécificité des sites. Combinant la vidéo, le son et les images, il tente souvent de modifier la perception et l’expérience du spectateur d’un environnement donné. Il s’intéresse particulièrement à la manière dont nous appréhendons le monde qui nous entoure et dont nous organisons notre vie par des mesures de l’espace (système métrique), du temps (calendrier et horloge) ou du tempo de la musique (battements par minute). L’artiste associe ces systèmes apparemment objectifs à d’autres plus subjectifs, tels que la chronologie des événements ou le rythme changeant d’improvisations musicales.

Cevdet Erek a reçu le prix Uriot pour sa vidéo Studio (2005) lors de sa résidence à la Rijksakademie, Amsterdam et le prix Nam June Paik en 2012.
