Alexander Apóstol was born in 1969 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. He currently lives and works between Caracas, Venezuela, and Madrid, Spain.

Encompassing photography and video, Apóstol’s oeuvre seeks to expose fractures in the modernist project, both in the artist’s native Venezuela and across South America. His work has been presented in international events including the 12th Shanghai Bienale, Proregress, curated by Cuauhtémoc Medina (2018); EVA International in Limerick, Ireland, curated by Inti Guerrero (2018); Gwangju Biennale (2018); BIENALSUR, curated by Agustín Pérez Rubio and Diana Wechsler (2017); Manifesta 9 (2013); the Mercosul Biennial, Brazil (2010); 54th Venice Biennale (2011); Prague Biennial (2003 and 2005); Cuenca Biennial (2004); Istanbul Biennial (2003); Printemps de Septembre in Toulouse, France (2003); São Paulo Biennial (2002); PhotoEspaña in Madrid (2003); FotoFest in Houston, USA (2002); Havana Biennial, Cuba (1997), among many others.

His works are part of important public and private collections, such as the Tate Modern in London, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Perez Art Museum in Miami and Daros Collection in Switzerland, among others.

Alexander Apóstol’s work has been featured in a variety of publications such as Vitamin PH (Phaidon, 2006), Art Photography Now (Thames and Hudson, 2005), Blink (Phaidon, 2002), Digital Art (Thames and Hudson, 2003), Mapas Abiertos (Lunwerg, 2003), Image and Memory: Photography from Latin America (University of Texas Press, 1997), Pulsions Urbaines (Toluca Editions 2017), C Photo (Yvory Press 2012), Contemporary Art in Latin America (Blackdog, 2010); the monography “Modernidad Tropical” (Actar/Musac, 2010); and the artist book “La salvaje revolucionaria en horario estelar” (Trienal de Puerto Rico/Fundación para la cultura urbana, 2010).
